In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

In the new film Phoenix, Oregon, though—and presumably in the real town near the state's southern border just a few miles from Medford—the people are realistically modern and mundane. They live in Phoenix because they've both made choices and deferred them. They compulsively refresh Facebook, give their boss the side-eye and attempt to take up jogging. What's more, this light drama from writer-director Gary Lundgren contains a few hallmarks of Southern Oregon in the present day. Venture capitalist money from the marijuana boom is poised to stimulate or erode the town's character, and local entrepreneurs sometimes aspire to a level of homegrown craft that exceeds the actual demand for it. Lundgren has seen these dynamics unfold firsthand, having lived the past seven years in Ashland, which is 10 miles down Route 99 from the film's titular city and about 90 minutes from where the film was shot in Klamath Falls. Since 2009, he's made three other indies set in this neck of the woods: Calvin Marshall, Redwood Highway and Black Road. "[These towns] feel almost like resting areas where people got off the highway to figure themselves out, " Lundgren says. "People are looking to start a new chapter, but there's also this sense of treading water. " Reinvention and complacency stage a quiet skirmish at the center of Lundgren's low-stakes, often winsome movie about a couple of townies opening a combination pizza parlor and bowling alley. On one end of that duality, there's Bobby (James Le Gros), a bartender and graphic novelist who's not so much struggling with his art as not properly trying. On the other is Carlos (Jesse Borrego), an eternally optimistic chef with a near-mystical attachment to his pizza-making. It's easy to see these two as a tireless angel and a hangdog devil on the shoulders of any creative person—especially a filmmaker working on shoestring budgets. "Bobby came to me on my worst days, " Lundgren says. "And on my best days, I feel like Carlos. " If not the deepest thematic well, Lundgren's naturalistic script is an ideal fit for the film's cavalcade of gifted character actors. Leading the way, Le Gros is something of an Oregon movie all-star, appearing in Gus Van Sant's Drugstore Cowboy and Kelly Reichardt's Certain Women. And Borrego is a cult icon for fans of 1993's Blood In Blood Out. Then there's Kevin Corrigan (Goodfellas, True Romance), who stands out as a bizarre bowling pinsetter mechanic named Al, and Lisa Edelstein (Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce), giving the film's strongest performance as the romantic lead Tanya, who transforms into a reality check. For fans of the American indie heyday circa 1990, it's quite a crew. "Our casting director [co-producer Christine Sheaks] would say to me, 'This is a real actor, Gary. You don't know how good they are'" Lundgren says. "Even more so, they want to know who they're acting with. " On a production of this size, every cast and crew member reveals another connection that helped the movie get made, but one unlikely figure comes to the fore. Lundgren credits Barry Hanscam, owner of Hanscam's Bowling Center in Klamath Falls, with essentially saving the movie's central conceit. "We looked all over Oregon for a bowling alley that felt so anachronistic that you really didn't know what decade it was when you walked in, " Lundgren says. Pati Patni Aur Woh Story: The film, a modern take on the cult comedy-drama by the same name (1978), follows the escapades of a married man, who falls for another woman, and the chaos that ensues. Pati Patni Aur Woh Review: Abhinav Tyagi aka Chintu Tyagi (Kartik), a government employee from Kanpur, is smitten by the feisty Vedika (Bhumi) when their parents get them to meet each other as a prospective match. Soon, they tie the knot. The couple seems to be enjoying marital bliss until Tapasya Singh (Ananya) walks into their life. She adds a dash of sass and spice to Chintu’s otherwise mundane existence. He now wants to spend time with the young girl, who is in Kanpur to look for a plot to set up a workshop for her boutique in Delhi. When Chintu feels that she is hesitant to be friendly with him due to his marital status, he spins a yarn. Adding to the madness is his friend Fahim Rizvi (Aparshakti), who sometimes aids Chintu in his exploits, and at times adds to his troubles. Unfortunately, things go out of control and lead to a lot of confusion and drama. Kartik as Chintu Tyagi strikes the right balance as a man who breaks away from the routine when an opportunity presents itself. The actor has a charming screen presence and makes the most of his part. Once again, he strikes with a monologue, something that’s become a trademark for Kartik. This time around, however, he isn’t ranting about the women in his life, but talks about the rut that most middle-class men get caught in. Bhumi is in good form as the ambitious Vedika (Chintu’s wife). She is a teacher, who has her own fan following among her students, and even flaunts a glam avatar. The actress has proved that she can get into the skin of any character and does the same with ease this time around, too. Ananya, who made debut earlier this year with ‘Student Of The Year 2’, shows a lot of improvement. She does need to work on certain aspects like her dialogue delivery, but she seems to have found her comfort zone in front of the camera. Besides the three central characters, Aparshakti Khurana, with his noteworthy comic timing, often steals the scene. He has proved time and again that he is an asset to any film. The actor has shared screen space with Kartik in ‘Luka Chuppi’, and their easy camaraderie is evident in this movie, too. It’s their scenes together that bring in the most laughs. Filmmaker Mudassar Aziz, who has directed films like ‘Happy Bhaag Jayegi’ (2016) and ‘Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi’ (2018), has a firm hold over the romcom genre. Though he takes some time to set up the plot, he doesn't let the film deviate from its path. He keeps the film breezy and ensures that there are enough funny dialogues and witty one-liners to keep you hooked. He keeps the narrative simple and avoids getting into the preachy zone. Though the plot is known, the director manages to keep you invested throughout. Though this is a remake of the Sanjeev Kumar-starrer, the treatment given to it is such that it is relevant even to the viewers today. The dialogues are funny, but though words like ‘kantap’ are used, it seems to be a superficial attempt at adding a local flavour. A tighter edit would have helped quicken the pace, but thankfully, there aren’t too many songs popping up. Watch out for two special appearances and a throwback to the original film, when Kartik hums, ‘Thande thande paani se’. If you are looking for some good entertainment this weekend, this one could be a delightful watch.

Pati Patni Aur Woh (or patriarchal values reinforced) is a funny film to watch if you plan on going back to the 70s where women were wronged and objectified. Kartik Aaryan’s new excuse to go monologuing doesn’t just fail at playing patchwork to the 1978 film but, also manages to misuse Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Panday’s characters in this piece of reworked regression. You’ve seen it all before. The charming small-town, home to a cool spunky girl, a guy who graduated just in time to get his parents talking about marriage and his childhood best friend. It has the same atmosphere of movies off-late, set in Kanpur and Lucknow with a mainstream cast of new-age Bollywood's Bhumi Pednekar, Kartik Aryan and Ananya Panday. With a star kid and an overrated actor capitalizing on Pyaar Ka Punchnama, you have your average hindi cinema-goer’s excuse to go watch a “new” movie. Well, at least that’s what they’re calling it. Pati Patni Aur Woh, written by Mudassar Aziz, runs on the 1978 film’s template and tries to give it some patchwork. Should we care? Abhinav Tyagi (Kartik Aryan) is the average guy tossed into the marriage market with Vedika Tripathi (Bhumi Pednekar) and his lack of agency and her willingness to try “restriction” instead of rebellion (coupled with her appetite for sex) the two become Pati Aur Patni. They have a few years of fun in them till they tire of each other. This is where the Woh, Tapasya (Ananya Panday) enters with a questionable booty shot because of course and is spotted by Tyagi’s wandering eyes. His attraction for her becomes the catalyst for marital problems, affairs and rife foundation for sexist jokes. Would it help if I mentioned her tells her that his wife is having an affair to sell a sob story and make himself available to her? If you thought Kartik Aryan was annoying, Kanpuriya Kartik Aryan is even more obnoxious Kartik Aryan known for his sexist monologues is trying real hard to keep up with his rep, keep up with his wife (who happens to be way cooler than he is) and keep his reputation clean as the privileged upper-middle-class guy in this movie. Pati Patni Aur Woh wants to sell you a victimized bechara Kartik Aryan all over again. Poor guy, he has no control over his adulterous tendencies, he has no regard for his wife who wants to move to a better city and he has absolutely no cares to give his friend Fahim played by a sorely misused Aparshakti Khuranna. Rajat has come a long way from Mumbai to play Chintu Tyagi. This transition is accompanied by a moustache, a wardrobe change and the most annoying smile (sidenote: where is his upper lip in this film? It looks like it’s been turned inside out). A few minutes into the film, our story’s Pati might have just said his opening lines and I was already annoyed. I knew he won’t have a single good thing to say throughout the 2. 8 hr runtime and I was right only to be proved wrong when he started monologuing again. Things got so much worse. T-Series Pati Patni Aur Patriarchal values reinforced The problem with Pati Patni Aur Woh is that it thinks the woke movie-goer won’t notice the outdated arcs it’s selling. Vedika after choosing to be domesticated for her new husband and dubbed adulterous finds out about his affair. Later in the film, she is given the agency and means to walk out. It is here that she meets a man from her past (and is probably judged by the uncles and aunties who were laughing at sexist jokes at the screening I was at) and thus begins an all-new chapter of messed up. Even with the reworked marital monologue, it’s still pretty misogynistic. The story tries to subvert the problematic gender stereotypes of first, the temptress and the wayward woman but, ends up reinforcing them. It is all done to make the hero look good, who by the way, is the whiniest guy, still upset about his ex-girlfriend who dumped him unceremoniously. The film gives her the role of a fickle woman and criticises even an off-camera plot device, imagine what it does with the women on the screen! All the focus is placed on the man’s plight with dialogues like “sabse barbaad pati hi hota hai” and “aashiq kuch bhi kar sakta hai” (we’ll come back to this line later). Let’s get one thing straight, Abhinav has practically no problems. His trials are highlighted only at the cost of making the women look bad. Coming to the main problem of the movie- Saving women for collateral damage in the Pati’s story While he is carrying on his extramarital tryst we see Tapasya play the dimwit, the city girl trapped by the charms of a simple guy. And somehow the movie wants to convince you that Abhinav still is that naive, nice guy caught between two women who are just two problems in his life. They have no other function than to bring out the boyish lover, the adoring husband, the depressed aashiq and the righteous guy in him. Tyagi is none of these things but the film wants so desperately for you to believe it that it makes villains out of its female characters. Tapasya is particularly ill-used as she’s given the job of seducing a married man since she’s unattached and then aiding the couple’s getting back together plan. Vedika too is equally eager to win her loser husband back and spend even more emotional labour than she already has. As if that wasn’t enough, there are sequences that see the women doing things for themselves but, even these are on a stencil of pleasing the man. Tapasya changes into desi attire in no time to meet the guy’s parents and Vedika gets into a western outfit for her big walk out of marital shackles (saree-wearing women are too sanskari to do that na? ). By twisting traditionality and modernity, the film reinstigates the idea of a man wanting both, the girl who will take him to a club and dance to that annoying ‘Dheeme Dheeme’ song and the one who will settle for the Kanpur life where he chills with his homie and cribs about the injustice he’s being dealt with. The women in this film are used merely to supplicate the hero who progressively becomes a worse human being. The problem is that the audience I watched in the company of didn’t see that judging from the uproarious laughter and some clapping at what I can only describe as lazy dialogue writing. And it’s so boring! More than watching it through the layered lens of Pati Patni Aur Woh conforming under the guise of a non-conformist film, you’ll see how utterly plain it is. The comedy-drama has absolutely nothing new to offer. It is the same old story dragged along for over two hours and by intermission, you’ll be vying for the climax and the sweet relief of getting out of the auditorium. Halfway into the run-time and I was already eyeing the exit signs prominently placed right under the screen. So tempting! This film has all the regressive comedy tropes, the idea of a man trapped in marriage, lured by a temptress and the hilarity that comes from hiding his affair. It’s exactly what you’d find in an episode of The Kapil Sharma Show. Run-off-the-mill lines, puns that are done to death and humour straight from the 70s. This movie is nothing of the patchwork it promises its predecessor. If anything, it furthers that agenda and adds the “aashiq kuch bhi kar sakta hai” line in a time when Kabir Singh is a thing! If you want to travel back to everything that was wrong with 1978 India go ahead, watch the movie and try not to be immediately pissed off by Kartik Aaryan’s new excuse to monologue. It’ll be as impossible as feeling sorry for bechara Chintu Tyagi.

The concept of an extramarital affair has always been Bollywood's trump card. From the primitive years of Indian cinema, several films have been based on the topic. While many of them succeeded in sending across a message, the rest were made solely for the purpose of entertainment. Mudassar Aziz's upcoming film Pati Patni Aur Woh, starring Kartik Aaryan, Ananya Panday and Bhumi Pednekar, is another one that relies on the concept of 'Gharwali' and 'Baharwali'. The makers of the film were so lazy while conceptualising this film that they didn't even want to invest in a new story or even an innovative title, for that matter. As the makers proclaim proudly, it is a remake the 1978 film of the same name which featured Sanjeev Kumar, Vidya Sinha and Ranjeeta Kaur. As the new Pati Patni Aur Woh hits the screen on Friday (December 6), we revisit the 1978 film directed by late filmmaker BR Chopra. The film, which released around 41 years ago, is considered as one of the classics of its era. It is said to be ahead of its time as the film showed the husband-wife relationship with a 'realistic' perspective. But then, we have to admit that it was problematic in so many ways. After making path-breaking cinema like Naya Daur (1957), Sadhna (1958), Kanoon (1960) and Chhoti Si Baat (1976), among several other gems, BR Chopra directed and produced Pati Patni Aur Woh, which talked about a middle-aged man Ranjeet Chhadha (Sanjeev Kumar) and his adventures of keeping an extramarital affair with his secretary Nirmala Deshpande (Ranjeeta Kaur), despite having a loving and caring wife Sharda (Vidya Sinha) and a son. PATI PATNI AUR WOH RECAP The film begins with a young Ranjeet and Sharda bumping their cycles into each other on the road. For the man, it is love at first sight as he is seen flirting with sly innuendoes, while the girl is abusing him for causing her harm. They meet again at a friend's wedding and Cupid strikes. Soon after a round of gaana-bajaana, followed by casual flirting, the two are head over heels in love with each other. Later, Ranjeet visits a clueless Sharda's home and asks her equally clueless father her hand in marriage. Then they are married. The husband and wife live with love for several years and become parents to a lovely son until Nirmala Deshpande enters their lives. She is Ranjeet's new secretary. Love blossoms between the boss and secretary as Nirmala sympathises with Ranjeet for having an ailing wife, who doesn't have many months to live. Shardha comes to know about her husband's affair and confronts him only to hear more lies. At last, Ranjeet gets caught and casts aspersions on the innocent secretary. To save her family, Shardha accepts her husband who swore not to repeat it. But, as they say, men will be men, Ranjeet is seen bringing out another set of medicines to fool his new secretary. This time, it's Parveen Babi. WHAT WENT WRONG IN PATI PATNI AUR WOH IN 1978 The problem with the BR Chopra film begins with the very first scene where Ranjeet and Shardha meet for the first time. The way the guy approaches the girl with sly remarks would have been extremely controversial if the film would release today. Ranjeet surprising Shardha by landing up at her doorstep to propose marriage is absurd, too. And then the father getting ready for the wedding, no questions asked, is unbelievable. Do we need to mention that the misogynistic conversation between Ranjeet and his cronies before the newlyweds' Suhaag Raat is disrespectful on so many levels? We think not. The handling of female characters by the writer and director is pathetic. They are shown as brainless, if not helpless, during the entire two hours of the film. The first time Nirmala meets Ranjeet and on being asked why does she want to work, she says, "Basically, koi Hindustani ladki working girl nahi hoti, " sounds insulting to many working women who work because they love being independent and not because they have any compulsion. Ranjeet says, "Aap jawaan hai, khoobsurat hai. Aapki figure achchi hai. Fir aap... Khair jo bhi hai aapke vichaar kaafi shuddh hai. Mujhe pasand aaya. " From dialogues to camera work and direction, the women are objectified in so many scenes in the film that keeping a count of it is difficult. Here, we should mention that BR Chopra is the same director who made Sadhna in 1958 which was about the emancipation of sex workers, exactly 20 years before he made Pati Patni Aur Woh. Even towards the end of the film, Ranjeet seems to have not learnt any lesson and even failed to understand the pain he caused his wife. He is again seen initiating another extramarital affair with his new secretary. Watch Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019) trailer here: While we don't know why Pati Patni Aur Woh was made even in 1978, remaking it in 2019 is a crime that should not have been committed. At the trailer launch of Pati Patni Aur Woh, Mudassar Aziz said that he has retained the "essence" of the original, despite giving a modern spin to the film. We hope the "essence" he is talking about is not the blatant misogyny depicted in the original film. I recommend this movie i just went to watch it today this movie took lots of laughs on me it's really funny👍🤣🤣. Stream aeronauts movie. Tom Harpers movie might have been a near modern historical classic if it had been treated to more truth than fiction. Instead, its Indiana Jones type foolishness eats away huge chunks of what could have been gut tearing historically factual suspense, and replaces it with old fashioned Saturday matinee nonsense - rendering the whole as simply unbelievable. This is a shame as it's based on some important historical facts that have been reduced to mere fictional fodder. What's left is just another example of Hollywoods PC gender pushing histrionics. The real-life male hero of this actual ballooning duo has been replaced by a fictional, ultra-modern, female 'role' model. Laughably 'modern' Hollywood!
Given all the real-life, deserving women the scientific world has had throughout history; why not make a movie about one of these - instead of adding a fictional one to our recorded history!
Some nice mock (CGI) aerial photography attempts to camouflage the obvious manipulative agenda pushing, and if seen on a large screen it will supply enough adrenalin rushes for those with a predisposition toward fear of heights or vertigo. The editing style is another drawback - just when things look like getting exiting in the balloon, we are forced back to ground to be shown how difficult it was, in the lead-up, for this duo to get airborne - these don't work well because we already know they won their battles - so it just serves to slow the whole thing down. Performances are uniformly good, and of its type, even with all the clichés, it's a good movie but could have been so much better (and more honest.

Even though it's very long, I was captivated throughout the entire film. The plot drags you in, the fight scenes are great, and the acting is as good as you'll find. The movie evokes your passion and grabs your emotions.
That being said, I feel sorry for all the "history buffs" who are appalled at this movie and cannot appreciate it for what it is. It's just a story. But instead they rail on it for historical Inaccuracies and label Mel Gibson as a racist. I'm not sure if that means that all war films are meant to be racist or something along those lines, but not all historical movies are meant to be history channel specials. A movie is made for entertainment, and it shouldn't be a huge deal if history is tweaked a tad. If the movie really grabs someone and makes then want to know more about the story, that's the history channel's cue.
So give this film a chance to entertain you and appreciate the story for what it is: a story. Enjoy.
